MA, MODULE 101

  • Explore my chosen genre further

For this module i plan on focusing my practical project around the horror genre – Which i spend a lot of time on last year, and taking a step further when using it as an advetisment.

  • Work with a bigger crew

On many of my previous projects i have kept to a moderately small crew, as much as it is easier to direct less people, i feel working with more people from various backrounds will certainly help shape my project more, and will also give me the opertunity to take advantage with the talent who are around me this year for this MA.

  • Overcome my fear of public speaking – about my own work, pitching

I have always been very nervous about speaking about my work to lrge group of people – especially pitching. I am hoping throughout the course we will all be able to pitch/share what we are working on in a professional sense, not only for experience but to overcome that fear of ‘all eyes on you’. I am also attending a few talks at the beginning of this module to help specifically with this, which will benefit me in the future.

  • Build an editing orientated show-reel/profile

My present showreel is to show all of the skills i have gained through filmmaking. However, since trailer cutting and advertisement in film is my main goal  this year, i am hoping by the end of the course i will also have a seperate profile to show specifically what i can do with a piece of work and advertise it correctly to the appropriate audience.

  • Have more work experience on other students/companies projects

This year i plan on being involved in as many projects as i can, sharing and helping with whatever skills are required from me, I also have a great opportunity to intern in Film & Media for National Trust – Working mostly on moving image adverts for their upcoming events.

MA, MODULE 101

By the end of my BA Film course I feel I have finally nailed down the type of genre I wish to work with and what interests me most. The next step I feel for me, is to what to do with the skills I have gained and to find my target audience – In my previous course we barely touched the tip of the iceberg.

During the full-time year studying the Entrepreneurship I wish to not only go into great depth when starting up a business as an Entrepreneur but how to be a successful Entrepreneur. With my interest in the seemingly arcane art trailer cutting, this will be my main focus, researching previous companies in the same area of business including the goals and risks that come with it, and where and who I should be networking with next, however the main goal here is target audience, and the first step – think like my audience.

Another aspect I wish to work on is how to advertise myself – How to make future clients WANT to hire me. This I will be researching with articles, interviews etc with leading Entrepreneurs in my chosen business route such as, Wild Card – an independent company that specialises in film advertising, who are behind the trailers for Unbroken, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Maleficent, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Great Gatsby, and many others. Their job is to boil down the two hours of footage into an intense, two-minute trailer that will become a crucial piece – maybe the crucial piece of a studio’s overall movie marketing strategy.

When a trailer really sings, its impact can be huge. As of mid-February, American Sniper – also another film Wild Card cut, has grossed more than $307 million in U.S. box offices. It’s also become the second-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. A lot, obviously, goes into marketing a movie, but Wild Card gets the credit for producing its haunting and heart-stopping trailer – This speaks to a specifically WIDE audience.

During the course I do wish to carry on my film-making, not necessarily to the extent as to when I was in a film course, but to experiment further as I go, backing up my research and to be part of my profile work –using the connections I have made around the college to not only create but to discover their needs and expectations when and if I were to be hired by them.
