FMP

I wanted my FMP to be my first short film, giving me an excuse to get it finished by a set deadline. I firstly wanted to take on the roles of Writer and Director, however after finding it hard to find a crew who wasn’t working on their own project i had to also take on the roles of Producer, Casting Director, Hair and Make-up, Location Manager, Grip and Camera Operator. With the help from Katy being my sound recordist, that certainly made it easier for me when it came to shooting.

I didn’t have any problems when filming or in Post Production, for 3 weeks straight my film became my life and even though i was a little nervous taking on such a big job by myself i feel it all went smoothly.

I learned new skills when it comes to using camera equipment and i feel more experienced in not only using the equipment correctly but setting up at my various locations. I also feel more confident in setting up a production, hiring cast & crew and making tough decisions, such as hiring the right actors for the roles, deciding on the appropriate camera lenses and and angles etc. and directing actors.

In conclusion, this being my first short film could have gone any way and i am proud of the final cut. When writing the script it was exactly what i had in mind and i have learned from the experience of having taken on so many roles and i am confident in moving not only this film forward into festivals etc, but starting new projects in the future.

With enough experience using Premier Pro i was very confident when it came to editing my footage. I would say the hardest thing to do was syncing some of the sound, especially in the 1920’s scene. I filmed each characters lines separately, and to my disadvantage while shooting Eve’s line’s there was hardly and wind and when filming Alex’s lines there was, even though a ‘dead cat’ was used. However challenging and maybe not perfect, the finished piece is acceptable.Screen Shot 2014-05-23 at 13.17.28

The music i used i do not own and is used just to hand in with this module. However if i enter this film into any festivals i will seek the rights to the songs or change them to either my own or to any other i can gain the rights too.

The backing music was composed my actor Tom Menary who specifically it together for my film. I have credited all roles taken in my film and any songs used.

I was however new to colour correction, and with enough time and experimenting i am proud with the outcome of the look of my film.Screen Shot 2014-06-02 at 18.23.29 Screen Shot 2014-06-02 at 18.23.45 Screen Shot 2014-06-02 at 18.24.40

We filmed over the course of two days, in four different locations. As soon as we starting shooting my actors were fa-nominal getting into character and asking questions on how i wanted certain things said in their rehearsals. They also followed instructions well and took any criticism, i see myself as very lucky to have worked with them on my first short film and i feel i have definitely made contacts and friends.

We only had a certain amount of time to film throughout the day because my either one of my actors of my crew had other engagements so we kept to my timetable and got all the filming done in time, making the shoots successful.

I had used the Canon 7D once before on a small project, so i worked with it pretty easily, switching between three different lenses (50mm, 70-200mm & 24mm). For all four locations i didn’t use the lighting i had brought, mostly because there was no need, the locations had enough natural light for me to use.

Whilst wanting to use the Merlin Steadicam, i had to settle for a very heavy tripod to put over my shoulder because it was the only thing available, making it just a little bit harder for me to film the longer dialogue parts of the film. The legs of the tripod were also faulty, when wanting a still shot it would slide so i had to hold the whole thing up the whole time shooting (i hope they burn that tripod). However, i overcome it and got the shots i needed.
