Present Day Scene –
My original location was going to Quaker Lane, a house a friend of mine going to let me film in. However due to builders starting their work next door for the next 6 weeks i was unable to film there. I then had 2 days to find a replacement location. Worrying i asked everyone i new to ask everyone they new and once posting on Facebook saying it was urgent, a friend messaged me offering his room on Hillside Avenue. Even though it being a student room, so plain walls, it worked to my advantage in the end, and was big enough to fit in my equipment and there was enough space for my actors to perform. The windows were also big enough to let in plenty of natural light to use.
I was originally looking for a room with a vintage twist too it giving an old and historic feel like the characters. However having a plain cream room, i felt it helped portray the character’s mood and relationship more, like all the colour had left Eve’s life, especially once compared to the other locations used for the flashback scenes.
1920’s Scene –
Originally i wanted this scene set in the evening under a lit street light, however due to the sun going down late at night, my actors were not available to film at such a late time. So i ended up shooting in the day, which turned out to look beautiful on camera with the sun making the green pop.
It was between two locations at first close together, i went down to the paths where i wanted to film at two different times, in the evening to check the lighting on camera and at night when it was dark to see if i needed any extra lighting or a light reflector.
Filming in the day was certainly easier.
1950’s Scene –
This scene was filmed in Beaumont Park, simply on a bench. I had some trouble with the sound because of construction that was going on just outside the park but we moved far enough away to not have the noises from the trucks in the background.
1990’s Scene –
This scene was filmed in my front room, i felt it already had a 90’s vintage theme to it with the leather chair in the window and wallpaper etc. With the curtains being an orange/red colour, with the sun shining through them i found it lit the room in a warm shade giving an intimate feeling which is what the scene shows between the two characters.
Eve – Costumes <— Word Document
Finding costumes for Eve was much easy than finding them for Alex, mostly because i used my own clothes (which had never even been worn) and luckily my actress was more or less my size.
Also with 3 years of experience in costume design, any adjustments that were needed were quick and easy to do.
For Alex, i had to ask my actor if he had certain pieces of clothing (e.g. a full suit), sending me photos to see if they were what i was looking for.
For the casting i used various social networking sites to promote myself and asked many people on the Film course for any contacts in the casting industry around Plymouth, giving them descriptions to pass on of the actors i was looking for (Casting – Lydia), however i found that Starnow.com was my favourite and most successful way to hire actors.I put up my ad and had quite a few people interested in the Eve’s character, however i was finding it difficult to find a male for Alex.
For each applicant who was interested, i sent a message giving a little bit more information about the film and the character. I also attached a piece of script for them to send me an audition tape, via the website. Three actresses sent me audition tapes.
I was impressed with all of them, however i felt that Sarah (my chosen actress for Eve) carried my words better, portraying Eve the way i had imagined best. The problem with one of the other actresses is that she lived in London and i would have had to spend more on paying for her travel to Plymouth, going with the actress from Plymouth saved me at least £40.
Finding a male lead was much harder, i kept promoting myself on social networking sites and sending emails to acting teacher at TR2 and Marjon.
Until i was recommended Tom by someone who had worked with him on previous project. So i contacted him on Facebook.com and sent him the full script (needing him within a matter of days) and he said he was very interested.
After sending and receiving conversational emails through Starnow and Hotmail, i feel more confident in contacting actors and and choosing correctly for my roles.
Script <—Downloadable Word Document
Writing the script was a little difficult because i was worried that some of the dialogue i had written wasn’t going to be hard to portray, especially by aspiring actors, however i am pleased to say the actors i found played the characters perfectly with the right amount of drama in their performances.
I wanted the story to be mostly about the two characters relationship and show what their lives were like together before we see them have this conversation in the present day. I also wanted to experiment in filming the flashback scenes, using my favourite era’s and putting these two characters in that time gave me a reason to push myself with the chosen era’s costumes, make-up, locations and editing techniques to give the scene an appropriate feel.
For my FMP I am will be doing a short film for the length of 5 – 8 minutes. My role will mostly be directing however I will also be writing the script and taking on the responsibilities of the Producer.
I will need 2 actors, 1 male and 1 female where I will find either through contacts or on an amateur actor hiring site where I don’t have to pay them.
I’m not sure whether I will need to add anyone to my crew seeing as the filming won’t be too difficult to do by myself; however I may need a hand with the sound recording during production.
The biggest risks for this project is if an actor drops out at last minute or if I can’t find the correct locations I need, however these can be avoided with enough planning and pre-production.
The film is pretty mediocre, it’s a drama so there’s no need for special effects etc, however I hope it will be a challenge, especially the way I plan on filming this short piece.
Film Summary – Two lovers who are immortal, and the only way they can die is by the hand of another immortal. These two people have been together for over a 100 years and the woman wants end her life. She thinks she has done everything she is ever going to do and felt everything she is going to feel. Having only ever met one other immortal, she turns to her lover for his help. This film will not necessarily go into the background on the legends of immortals etc but will be mainly focused on these two characters relationship and how they deal with this decision. I am not planning on showing the death at the end but rather imply that it is happening.
This script will need a lot of research, not only for my writing but for my actors who have to portray such a hard range of emotions.
